Apple Cheese Danishes (Print Layout)

Flaky puff pastries with creamy cheese filling and cinnamon-spiced apples, perfect for brunch or dessert.

# What You Need:

→ Pastry

01 - 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
02 - 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

→ Cream Cheese Filling

03 - 6 oz cream cheese, softened
04 - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
05 - 1 tsp vanilla extract

→ Apple Filling

06 - 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
07 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter
08 - 2 tbsp brown sugar
09 - 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
10 - 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
11 - 1 tsp lemon juice

→ Decoration

12 - 1/4 cup powdered sugar
13 - 2–3 tsp milk or lemon juice

# Directions:

01 - Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
02 - In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring often, until apples are soft and syrupy. Let cool completely.
03 - Beat together cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy.
04 - Roll out puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth any creases. Cut into 8 equal squares.
05 - Place pastry squares on the prepared baking tray. Lightly score a smaller square inside each one without cutting all the way through, and prick the center area with a fork.
06 - Spread a spoonful of cream cheese filling in the center of each pastry, staying within the scored border. Top with a generous spoonful of the cooled apple mixture.
07 - Brush the exposed pastry edges with beaten egg for a golden finish.
08 - Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
09 - Allow danishes to cool slightly. Mix powdered sugar with enough milk or lemon juice to create a drizzle consistency, then zigzag over the cooled danishes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

# Expert Suggestions:

01 -
  • The contrast between tangy cream cheese and warmly spiced apples is the kind of combination that makes people close their eyes when they take a bite.
  • Using frozen puff pastry means you get bakery level results without spending half your day laminating dough by hand.
02 -
  • If your puff pastry gets too warm while you are working with it, pop the whole tray into the fridge for 10 minutes before baking so the layers stay distinct and flaky.
  • Make absolutely sure the apple filling has cooled to room temperature before spooning it onto the cream cheese, or the heat will melt the filling into a mess.
03 -
  • Dust your knife with flour between cuts to keep the pastry edges clean and sharp so they puff up evenly in the oven.
  • These danishes are at their absolute best within two hours of baking when the pastry is still faintly warm and the contrast between crisp shell and soft filling is perfect.
